The much-loved Jubilee Street venue may be forced to close following the withdrawal of an Arts Council grant last year, worth £150,000 per annum. The venue currently has debts exceeding £300,000, and accountants for the venue have written to the organisations it owes money to, offering to pay 1/3 of the outstanding amounts over a period of 3 years. It is unclear at this time how matters will proceed, but management of the Komedia has already arranged to meet with creditors imminently to try to broker a deal. Many residents will be sad to see any possible demise – the venue has been the stage for many top rated performances and shows over the years, and many council figures attribute part of the success of the regeneration of the North Laine area to the existence of the Komedia.
