Sussex Police Issue ‘Hoax’ Scam Warnings

Sussex Police are issuing warnings regarding a parcel delivery scam involving a company called Parcel Delivery Services (that name must have taken a while to come up with). Apparently the scam runs like this: PDS pop a note through your door saying that they tried to deliver a package to you with a number to ring to arrange re-delivery. But – shock, horror – there is no package and you are billed at £15 per minute on the phone line. Now firstly it is not possible to run a £15 per minute phone line and secondly the company’s £1.50 per minute lines were cut off and they were prosecuted and fined five years ago, as PhonepayPlus, the phone-paid services regulator, have been at pains to point out ever since.

This gaffe from PC Plod of Lewes Police comes after last year’s advice from a Brighton PCSO (printed in a less reputable community magazine) warning that hackers could take control of the SIM card in your mobile phone and make calls at your expense by getting you to type in a series of numbers into your phone – an outright hoax which started in America involving AT&T, and which has been circling the planet for the past 15 years. Nice to know that blind faith has overtaken evidence-based enquiry in our county’s police force. Oh, and children aren’t being kidnapped in ASDA car parks by Eastern European couples either – another old favourite.

Still No Identity For Beach Body

Police are still trying to identify a woman whose body was found on the beach at Western Esplanade, Hove, on 12th January. The woman was white, aged between 35 and 50 with short wavy auburn hair. Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

Suitcase Bomb Scare

A suitcase abandoned on the road close to Roedean School on the A259 caused a bomb scare which closed roads in both directions and caused traffic chaos. This comes shortly after another bomb scare in St. Michael’s Place which prevented many residents from returning to their homes for some hours.

When it is time for a police conference what better to do than take ten top officers to the £250-a-head Grand Hotel, all at the taxpayers’ expense of course, rather than the police conference centre near Gatwick, a mere 19 miles away? That’s the decision Robin Merrett, Assistant Chief Constable of Sussex Police, took, claiming that he wanted to take the officers to ‘different surroundings’. Slaugham Manor, where the police have training facilities as well as 60 bedrooms and 15 conference rooms, was refitted in the 90s to the tune of £900,000. I can understand why they didn’t use it. Must be a real dive.

A German truck driver who had arrived from Dover to make a delivery in Hove found that he had more loaded onto his vehicle than he was expecting. Becoming suspicious of noises he heard inside the truck, the driver made an unscheduled stop at Hove Police Station, who gladly took delivery of twelve illegal immigrants who had stowed away.

Police are seeking help from residents after a girl was raped on King’s Road, between Buddies and The Old Ship Hotel on Thursday 29th May at 11.40pm. They are seeking an Asian-looking man, under 30 years old, with very short black hair. He was wearing a white hooded top and a diamante earring.
